ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A former Alaska Regional Hospital employee has been charged with sexually assaulting a patient under his care.
Alan LaPage, 49, appeared in court Monday to hear the five counts against him, which were filed by detective Sean Purcell of the Anchorage Police Department.
LaPage cared for an 18-year-old man who was severely injured in a November 1997 traffic crash, spent seven weeks in a coma, and was hospitalized until March 1998.
According to the criminal complaint, the man contacted police in September 2000 to report a hospital employee named Alan had assaulted him.
Purcell said the investigation took so long because police were searching for other potential victims and had to interview scores of people LaPage had looked after during his employment at Alaska Regional. LaPage worked at the hospital from May 1994 to January 2001. Police heard no other complaints.
Purcell said the victim didn't initially report the assaults because he was embarrassed but came forward 21/2 years later after being encouraged by his family.
LaPage is being held at Anchorage Jail on $100,000 bail.
