Secondary class scheduling for 2011-2011 began April 18. If you have a student who will be in 9-12 grade next year, please call the office now to set up an appointment with Mr. Leiter to schedule classes for next year.
2011-2012 Re-enrollment: We are going to utilize the re-enrollment option on Sycamore this year. If you are planning to re-enroll your child, please log onto Sycamore, click on "My School" in the left-hand column, then on "My re-enrollment." For current families, if you pay your 2011-2012 matriculation for all your children by May 26 you can save $25 per family. Keep in mind that your child will not be officially put on the list for a class until you come by the office and pay matriculation for next year ($275, K1-12th grade and $210 for preschool). Tuition will not increase for the 2011-2012 school year.
We have kicked off our "Pennies for Japan" campaign to raise money for victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Your donations are welcome. The jar is available in the front office. Checks may be made payable to K-Beach Elementary. Our goal is $500!
Friday, April 29, is Volunteer Appreciation Day. All volunteers are invited to an assembly in the gym at 8 a.m. and then to the staff lounge for some food and conversation.
On Friday 6th grade students will travel to Soldotna Middle School for visitation. Please be sure your 6th grade student has tuned in a permission slip if they would like to attend.
On Saturday, April 30, our student council is sponsoring a "K-Beach Green Up Day" from 10:00 - 12:00. Please join us and clean up/green up our community!
On Monday, April 25, the Kenai Central High Girls Softball team will hold an ice cream social and silent auction in the KCHS cafeteria, 6 -- 8 p.m. Bidding will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last one hour. Ice cream with all the toppings will be $5 per person, $8 for two and $10 for a family. All proceeds are to go to the KCHS softball team to assist in travel and equipment. The Kenai Peninsula School District in collaboration with the State of Alaska Department of Transportation and the City of Soldotna are hosting an Alaska Construction Career Day Wednesday, April 27, at the Soldotna Sports Center. Students will learn about opportunities in Alaska's construction industry and apprenticeship programs. Students will have a chance to experience hands on activities in carpentry, welding, heavy equipment operation and more. Industry and business representatives from some of the largest companies in the state will be present.

New student registration will be held the week of May 2 for those students offered enrollment in Kaleidoscope. If your child is new to KPBSD, please bring in the birth certificate and shot record. Kindergarten classroom visitations will also be held that week. If your child was offered a kindergarten spot and you haven't scheduled a visit please do so as soon as possible.
As a reminder -- if you want to volunteer for any of the upcoming field trips you must have completed the criminal background check and the online training for Kaleidoscope School. The background check is done through the District's website at www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us. Click on the employment tab, click on the Volunteer tab (center of page) scroll to Kaleidoscope School, and follow the instructions from there. The volunteer training is found on the Kaleidoscope home page. Contact the office with questions. These two items must be completed 48 hours prior to a field trip.
As this year draws to a close we are planning our annual mini-course program and award day activities. Our annual 8th grade farewell will be held Friday, May 20, at 8 a.m. in the gym. Mini courses will be held on Monday, May 23, and Tuesday, May 24. The school-wide barbecue and awards assembly will be held on Friday, May 20. If you have a questions about the end of year activities or you would like to chaperone a field trip/mini-course please call the office at 283-1700. Students need to pay all of their fees prior to mini-courses.

We will be having Kindergarten registration and orientation on Thursday, April 28, from 9:30 -- 11 a.m., and 1 -- 2:30 p.m. You may choose which time works best for your schedule. If you are interested in getting involved with the NNS Site Council, applications are now available in the office and on our school homepage. The purpose of the council is to give input and guidance to the school and serves as a resource, sounding board, and core for communication between the many stakeholders in our school. As representatives, the members are responsible for bringing the information to the council. Please stop by the office or call the school if you need more information.
The school library is hosting a buy one, get one free book fair Monday -- Friday, 9 a.m. -- 3 p.m., and 9 a.m. -- 6 p.m. on Tuesday. This is a great opportunity to select summer reading material.
This week is Volunteer Appreciation Week at Redoubt. Redoubt volunteers are greatly appreciated and a very important part of our school. They help in so many ways and our school would not be what it is without them. Volunteers are invited to a reception in their honor from 1 -- 3 p.m. Thursday in the library.
Parent input for 2011-12 class placement will be accepted through Friday, April 29. Forms are available on Edline and at the school office. Completed forms should be turned in at the office.
Redoubt's spring musical, "Safari Animals," is Tuesday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m., the Soldotna High School Auditorium. Volunteers are needed to help with costumes and decorations/props. The SoHi stage will be decorated on Monday, May 2, from 4:15 -- 6 p.m. Families are encouraged to come help. It is a creative and fun time.
Soccer hosts Kenai Central Thursday at 4 and 6 p.m., and varsity soccer hosts Hutchinson Friday at 4 and 6 p.m.
Prom tickets are on sale at the office during lunch. Prom will be from 8 -- 11 p.m., April 30. Cost is $35 per person, and the attire is formal. Promenade will begin at 7 p.m. in the gym. Admission for the audience is $2.

All volunteers are invited to the Volunteer Appreciation luncheon on April 29 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the school library. Soldotna Elementary staff wants to honor the more than 152 volunteers who have helped learning and our students.

Students are attending the Construction Career Day April 27 at the Soldotna Sports Center. This is an opportunity to meet industry/apprenticeship leaders from across the state and learn about exciting careers in Alaska's construction industry.
Mayor Peter Micciche is collecting information to determine what teen center services would be supported in Soldotna. The SoHi band will be having a Spring band concert on April 28, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The band will be performing several selections as well as instrumental solos and ensembles. Admission is $2.

We will be holding a pre-school visitation April 26, 11:30 a.m. -- 12:30 p.m. This will be a chance for parents and students to see the classroom and do a project with Mrs. Granger while parents are explained the program and the selection process for next year. Parents need to have completed an application prior to coming to the visitation. We will only be able to accept 10 students into the program for next year so please be sure to get your application in now and let others know who may not be connected with our school yet.
Kindergarten visitation is coming up May 5, 1:30 -- 3 p.m. Parents are invited to bring their entering kindergarten students to spend a portion of the afternoon in the classroom. In order to participate in the visitation parents must have completed the registration process. If you need a packet please stop by and pick one up. A reminder that vaccinations and birth certificates are an important part of registration.
We are taking orders for our annual memory book. Deadline in April 29. The only way to assure that your child is able to get a memory book is by ordering now. There may be a few extras but when we have them they sell out quickly.
Our PTO is a vital part of our school. If you would be interested in serving with the PTO please contact me or PTO President Corrine Johnston to have your name placed on the ballot.
We recently sent home printouts of student enrollment information for your review. It is important that these be returned as a registration confirmation for next year. If you haven't already done so please return these quickly. If you did not receive yours please call the office and we will gladly print a new one.
Our 6th grade is beginning the transition process for middle school. This week they began using a class schedule that requires them to go to their lockers and get the materials needed for the next class in three minutes. Next week they will have a visit from the Soldotna Middle School counselor. On April 26 SMS has a parent night beginning at 6:30 p.m. Our 6th grade class will be going to SMS on April 29 to visit.
A reminder that there is no school next Friday. We will have a newsletter on Thursday so watch those backpacks so you don't miss any important information.
