Rough day at airport

Posted: Wednesday, April 26, 2000

Friday afternoon proved to be eventful at the Kenai Municipal Airport.

Barry Beggs, air traffic manager at the Kenai Air Traffic Control Tower, said two aircraft incidents occurred, both without injuries.

Shortly after noon, a Piper Cub was flying in a local traffic pattern when the aircraft ground looped -- lost directional control made a 360-degree turn, at times contacting the ground -- and skidded off the runway, Beggs said.

The aircraft sustained minor damages.

The Kenai Fire Department responded, but the pilot -- the only person aboard the plane -- sustained no injuries.

The matter is under investigation by both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administra-tion.

A brief time later, a Cessna 185 with two passengers was heading eastbound in the air from Kenai when it reported electrical abnormalities in the cockpit.

The aircraft returned to the airport, was cleared to land and proceeded to land without incident, Beggs said.

The Kenai Fire Department responded, but no injuries were reported.
