Silver Salmon fifth at Junior Olympics

Leo Grasso paced the Soldotna Silver Salmon swim team to a fifth-place finish at the 2001 State Junior Olympics Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Anchorage.

Grasso finished first in the 200-yard backstroke -- setting a team record, the 100 backstroke and the 100 freestyle. Grasso picked up second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley, the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, earning laurels as the state individual champion in the boys 13-to-14-years-old age bracket. Grasso netted 128 points for the Silver Salmon in the team competition.

Abby Kiffmeyer took first place in the girls 100 butterfly and second in the 100 backstroke. Kiffmeyer set team records in the 13-to-14 group with her third-place times in the 50 and 100 freestyles. She added a fifth place in the 200 freestyle.

Jenna Syverson set Silver Salmon records with her finishes in the 100 freestyle (10th) and 50 freestyle, where she place fourth.

Lyla Marey scored 102 points for the Silver Salmon, second-best on the team, earning herself a fourth-place overall finish in the girls 10-and-under age group. Marey set a team record in the 100 backstroke.

Nick Sorrell finished the meet with 97 points good for sixth in the state, swimming to third in the 200 breaststroke, fourth in the 200 individual medley, 1,000 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 freestyle.

Aladean Marey scored 94 points, good for seventh place in the state, with a third in the 50 freestyle, a fourth in the 100 backstroke and a fifth in the 100 butterfly.

Lucas Petersen notched a pair of wins in the boys 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley as well as a third place in the 200 freestyle and a fifth place in the 100 breaststroke. Joshua Gemmell had a pair of second places in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

Amberlee Query's top finish was seventh in the 200 breaststroke. Clayton Harrison swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Ty Schweigert was fifth in the 100 butterfly.

Karina Petersen had a sixth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and an eighth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.

Pehr Hartvigson swam to 12-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke, the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Marit Hartvigson was seventh in the 50 breaststroke. Mark Youngren was seventh in the 100 breaststroke. Catie Coursen was 16th in the 400 individual medley.

Other Soldotna Silver Salmon Swimmers who qualified to compete at the Junior Olympics include Caitlin Martin, Amy Jahreg, Adrienne Marey, Amirah Marey, Keegan Birchfield, Nathan Grabowski, Sarah Youngren, Olivia Bowen and Eve Green.

Bowen recently broke the club record in the 25 butterfly with a time of 18.38.
