ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Drew Dix, a Fairbanks resident who received the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, has been named as the director of a proposed homeland security office, Gov. Tony Knowles announced Friday.
The new office is part of Knowles' proposed budget package and is subject to legislative approval.
Dix, 57, was in the Army for 20 years, serving two tours in Vietnam before retiring as a major. In Vietnam, he was a counter-terrorist unit leader.
Beside the Medal of Honor, Dix won the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Knowles made the announcement at a gathering of veterans in Kenai.
