Hilma Marie Voss

Posted: Sunday, April 27, 2003

Hilma Marie Voss died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at her assisted living home, Country Living, in Sterling. She was 94.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Kenai Eagles Lodge No. 3525.

Ms. Voss was born Nov. 7, 1908, in Ironwood, Mich. She attended school in Saxon, Wisc. She married Ardell LaMarche in 1927, and together they had five children. She married Ernest A. Voss in 1948. They lived in Hurley, Wisc., where they raised the children. Mr. Voss transferred to Ashland, Wisc., where they resided until ill health caused his retirement. They wintered in Tucson for many years. When he died, Ms. Voss moved to Tucson, where she remained until moving to Alaska to be near her daughter, Arlene Coghill, in Nenana. She lived in Fairbanks from 1985 to 1995, then moved to the Nenana Living Center. Failing health brought her to live with her granddaughter, Jocelyn Kleinhans-Coghill, in Kenai.

"Hilma had a full and rich life. She was an industrious homemaker, who enjoyed her home and making it a showplace. She was an excellent seamstress and had a talent for looking at clothing in the pricey shops, returning home, making a pattern from newspapers and creating beautifully tailored clothing for the entire family," her family said.

"She was an adventurer, and first learned to drive in a Model-T Ford. She owned and drove cars until she was 92. She had several hobbies during her lifetime, the two most important being painting with oils, and dancing. Dancing to the music of the Big Bands when they traveled across the Midwest, was one of her fondest memories. She later learned square and round dancing, which was her passion until well into her 60s. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother."

Ms. Voss was a 4-H leader in Hurley for 17 years and president of the Women's Association of the Ashland Presbyterian Church for several years. She was a master gardener and had a "green thumb," growing and preserving the majority of the family provisions for a large number of years.

Ms. Voss was preceded in death by her husbands, Ardell LaMarche and Ernest A. Voss; parents, Hilma Seppi and Emil Lakkala; brothers, two of them infants born in Finland, and William and Richard Lakkala; sisters, Martha Saari and Helia Sturkol; and grandson, Wesley W. Kleinhans.

She is survived by her children, Arlene LaMarche-Coghill of Fairbanks, Frank (Gordon) LaMarche of Palmer and Ardie J. LaMarche, Paradise, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to: Jocelyn Coghill, 513 Pine Ave., Kenai, AK 99611.
