KENAI (AP) -- A Soldotna High School freshman has won the grand prize in this year's Caring for the Kenai competition.
Pehr Hartvigson is developing a way to filter wastewater from boat bilge pumps and outboards to reduce pollution entering the Kenai River and other waterways.
Hartvigson won a $1,500 savings bond from Unocal/Alaska Nitrogen Products for his idea.
The second-place finisher was Ella Ames, also a Soldotna High freshman, who designed a landscaping plan for a proposed riverfront park in Soldotna.
Third place went to Haley Smith, another Soldotna High freshman, for her plans to manufacture plastic-coated fishing weights.
