A busy business meeting for city chambers

A free Business-to-Business Expo is sponsored by the Kenai and Soldotna chambers of commerce and the City of Soldotna Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Soldotna Sports Center. The expo will feature speakers, vendor booths and networking opportunities. The expo coincides with a joint chamber lunch at the sports center, noon to 1 p.m., featuring Tim Sullivan Jr., business development officer with the State of Alaska Division of Economic Development, and Bill Popp, President and CEO, Anchorage Economic Development Corporation. Lowe's to host Home Improvement Show

Lowe's in Kenai will host a Home Improvements Show for consumers and contractors May 4-7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Vendors will be on hand to answer all of your home improvement questions.

Fishin' Chix plans chapter meeting

It's o'fishal! A chapter of Fishin' Chix has been started in Alaska! The first chapter meeting will be today at 6 p.m. at the Riverside House in Soldotna. Fishin' Chix is recruiting women who love to fish and want to have some fun. So if you are interested or know someone who is (hint: wife, daughter, mother, girlfriend, aunt) please go to and sign up for the 2011 membership. Peninsula Realtors hold raffle fundraiser

The Kenai Peninsula Association of Realtors is holding its annual Hospice and Habitat for Humanity raffle Fundraiser. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Grand prize is a 2011 Outlander 400 four-wheeler ATV, first prize is a Tikka 300 Winchester magnum rifle, second prize is a framed print of "The Waterfall," by Ed Tussey, and third prize is a basket from Homer Bear Creek Winery. Cad-Re sponsors April for Ares

Cad-Re Feeds is designating April for Ares, a Soldotna-based certified search-and-rescue dog. During the month Cad-Re will allocate portion of sales from several departments to Ares' training fund. Small Business Development Center plans seminars

Energy efficiency audits seminar -- Are you a local small business that wants to reduce your energy costs? Sign up for a free seminar offered by the USDA and Homer Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy advocate Taz Tally. You will learn information about energy efficiency audits, how to obtain a free energy audit, and the USDA grant and loan programs that are available to help pay for your energy efficiency upgrades. The presentation is May 27, 1 to 3 p.m. in the Red Diamond Center, Suite 12. Online registration deadline is May 20.

Grant writing basics -- Loretta Spalding walks you through the basics of successful grant writing skills, including how to search for grants, what to include in your grant and procedures once you receive a grant. The course takes place May 5, 3:30 to 7 p.m., at the Alaska Small Business Development Center, Suite 12, Red Diamond Center Cost is $65. Maximum eight students to be guaranteed a computer. Registration deadline is May 2.

Quickbooks 2009 -- Learn to use QuickBooks 2009 and organize your business data so you're prepared when tax time rolls around. This is a 4-session, 10 chapter, $155 seminar, scheduled from 5:15 to 9 p.m. on May 24, May 31, June 7 and June 14 at Suite 12 at AK SBDC- Red Diamond Center. Bring a thumb drive to save your lessons for practice at home. Only 10 seats. Register by May 10. Pre-requisite: Typing/keyboarding experience required.

'Profit Mastery' 2-day seminar -- Southwest Regional Director Bryan Zak presents a two-day Profit Mastery Seminar on May 31 and June 1, from 9 to 5 p.m. To qualify for a jobs bill limited time offer of $200, you must register online and pay by May 15. After May 15, rate goes back to $395. This is a 16-hour hands-on course that will help you set goals for the future of your business, control spending and pricing and leave with a process to assess the performance of your business and a strategy to implement change.

Starting a business -- A 1-hour free "Starting a Business" seminar features Bryan Zak answering your basic questions on starting a business on the Kenai Peninsula while preparing you for a productive relationship with Alaska Small Business Development Center. Come and learn about AKSBDC and our partner programs and why you should register for our free counseling services. Times differ so check specific time for: May 2, May 25, June 7 and June 21.
