JUNEAU (AP) A taxi cab struck a wolf in Mendenhall Valley, forcing police to put the injured animal down.

Police killed the wolf after it was hit on Glacier Spur Road early Tuesday morning.

Police said they initially were told that the vehicle had struck a bear. The taxi company's name was not released.

When officers arrived at the scene, they noticed the animal looked like a small bear from a distance, then saw it was a wolf.

The wolf was severely injured, police said. The animal was euthanized and Alaska State Troopers were notified to claim the carcass.
