The season of road work is upon us, and highway closures begin this week. Sections of the Sterling Highway near Cooper Landing and the Seward Highway near Seward will be closed for portions of the night.
Speed limits are reduced, and fines are doubled for traffic violations in posted work zones. Here's where to expect construction:
The Sterling Highway from Mile 37 (the Seward Highway intersection) to Mile 45 (Kenai Lake) is being rebuilt and widened. Construction began last year and will resume today. The road is rough in places, and the speed limit is 35 mph near Quartz Creek (Mile 40.9).
The road will close at 11 p.m. today and reopen at 5 a.m. Tuesday. The night closures will run weekly Mondays through Thursdays.
The work is scheduled to finish at the end of June.
The Seward Highway from Mile 8 (the Grouse Creek Canyon area) to Mile 18 (Snow River) is being rebuilt with a new bridge and passing lanes. Construction will begin Tuesday. The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph in the work zone.
The road will close at midnight Tuesday night and reopen Wednesday at 6 a.m. Closures in the early morning hours Wednesdays through Fridays will continue through October.
Funny River Road
Paving from Mile 2.7 to Mile 17 was finished last year, but expect crews spreading topsoil and seeding grass along the shoulders starting around the middle of May. They also will work on the bridge at Funny River.
No closures are planned, but be alert for flaggers.
Other road projects in Southcentral Alaska may affect peninsula travelers venturing farther from home.
Construction of parking at pathways between Girdwood and Bird Point will continue through June. The Bird Point parking lot and the trail access at Mile 96 are closed.
The path between Miles 90 and 96 is closed because of avalanche debris.
Construction continues at Anchorage International Airport on the departure ramp at the domestic terminal. Travelers should allow additional time to get to and from the airport.
International Airport Road still is under construction, as well. Watch for reduced speed limits and ramp repaving at the Minnesota Drive intersection. Expect future road, lane and ramp closures.
Minnesota Drive will be upgraded from the Old Seward Highway to Tudor Road. Watch for reduced speed limits and road and lane closures through July.
Matanuska -Susitna valleys
The Parks Highway will be under reconstruction from the Glenn Highway to Church Street. Watch for signs about reduced speed limits and alternate access to businesses near the work zone.
