Newest Young Marine unit says thanks for community support

On behalf of the Arctic Young Marines of Kenai, I would like to thank the generous people of Kenai for supporting the recent Arctic Young Marine Egg Sale.

The Arctic unit is the newest Young Marine unit in the nation. We are only two months old and have 50 young people and eight adult members and are growing every day.

I know that fund-raising is a difficult task, and I was not expecting too much as the Young Marines went out with their baskets of eggs. I was amazed and deeply moved by how generous and supportive the good people of Kenai were to our young members as they endeavored to raise funds for our unit.

Thanks to the wonderful support they received, we are now able to purchase first aid kits, ribbons, certificates and set an activity budget.

Not only have we received generous support from the kind people of Kenai, but also donations in kind from the American Legion, Agrium, Kachemak Electric, Peak Oilfield Services and S&R Enterprises. I would like to also send a special thank you to Carrie Ward of the Nikiski Pool for so generously donating her time testing our kids for their swimming ribbons.

From the bottom of my combat boots, I thank each and every one who gave so generously and supported these great kids.

Thank you!

If anyone would like to know more about the Young Marine program and the Arctic unit, you are invited to call me at 262-1602.

Funds raised through cookie sales inance adventures in Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts Susitna Council would like to thank the community for helping make this the most successful Girl Scout cookie sale in the history of Girl Scouts Susitna Council. Through the dedication and service of everyone involved, the Girl Scout cookie sale spreads the word about Girl Scouting in a positive and effective way.

Through the cookie sale activity, Girl Scouting not only advances its purpose but generates a significant portion of the money it needs to fulfill its purpose. Seventy-five percent of each box of cookies sold benefits Girl Scout troops by providing them with funds for troop activities, camp scholarships, safely maintained camp sites to use, well trained troop leaders, program activities, events, trips, adventures and more.

Thank you to the local media for promoting the sale and to the businesses that offered their warehouses for the distribution of cookies. Thank you to Carrs Quality Center, Safeway, Fred Meyer, Kmart, and M&M Market in Nikiski, and all the other businesses in the area that allowed troops to set up tables and sell cookies inside their stores. And thank you to each and every individual for purchasing Girl Scout cookies!

Buying cookies is just one of the ways our community shows support for its children and their abilities as future leaders of the community. Thank you!
