Kodiak baseball sweeps SoHi

Posted: Sunday, May 01, 2011

Kodiak swept the Soldotna baseball team by a combined score of 24-1 in a doubleheader at Kodiak on Saturday.

Game 1 counted toward the Northern Lights Conference standings, a 6-1 Kodiak win, while Game 2 was a nonconference contest. Kodiak won the second game 18-0, though SoHi coach Roger Phillips said he fielded a lineup of mostly junior varsity players.

"A little rough around the edges," Phillips said. "The bats were a little cold, we stranded far too many men on base and just weren't able to find the gaps."

SoHi senior Josiah Covey had five strikeouts and two walks in Game 1, allowing six runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Stars committed five errors behind Covey. Mitchel Daugherty pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings in relief.

"The score doesn't indicate the effort he made," Phillips said of Covey.

The Bears plated 16 runs in the first inning of Game 2 against the Stars' young lineup. SoHi had a combined six hits in the two games.

SoHi hosts Homer at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
