Group may be packing up, but effort not wasted on children
As committee chair of Pack 454, I wish to extend my gratitude to our pack families and to the community that has supported us for five years. Our pack is having a bittersweet moment as we celebrate our fifth year in scouting. We have to pack up our scout songs, pow- wow books and game boxes and say good-bye. With declining enrollment and lack of willing adult leadership, we find ourselves at the end of a really great adventure.
There have been many wonderful people that have been a part of Pack 454 in the past five years. Intrepid souls like Cheri Karnikis, Barb Udelhoven, Marty Hapeman, Cindy and Karl Kircher, Patsy Boutin, Laura and Jim Gossman, Sue Singleton and Nora Bessex organized and got us airborne. Currently Tracy Foister, Beth Selby, Sue Perletti, Deb Pearson, Cindy Bond, Scott Misner, Dewayne Whitley and Tammy Clancy have all poured their time and talents into the boys.
Like all organizations, we found ourselves in need of help throughout the years, so with the support of the following individuals and businesses, whom have displayed outstanding community leadership, we managed. Thanks to our charter organization Dave Hutchings of Hutchings Chevrolet and our character representative Mark Winston. Also thanks to J-B Stor N' Lok, Blakeley's Auction Company, Kasilof Mercantile, Mary Lambe, Jersey Subs, Beemun's Variety, Unocal Alaska, Kasilof Eagles, Soldotna Lions, Columbia Paint, The Big T, Udelhoven Oil Field Services, Father Taro, Dairy Queen and Trustworthy Hardware. Also lending a hand were Hatten Recycling, Tim D. Apted AMS2 of the United States Navy, Spenard Builders Supply, Dons Hobbies, Regal Foods, Ann Tappana, Ken Halverson of Tustumena Elementary, Solid Rock Bible Camp, Safeway, Sun Dog Embroidery, Malstons and the Peninsula Oilers. Individuals and businesses alike said to these kids, "You and your future are important to us."
In times when sponsor dollars are limited, I want to assure these businesses and individuals that it was not a waste. Please do not hesitate to invest in our community's children. It gets overwhelming to see so much need, but all children are a blessing and unique. Each child is trying to find their way into adulthood through scouting, sports, youth groups, 4-H, music or many other worthy endeavors. Do what you can, help them help themselves and the investment will come back to you -- in better children, students and future community leaders.

Community spirit helps others
Kudos to Norm Blakeley for helping out at our recent spaghetti dinner and dessert auction for Bea Johnson. Norm, you always come when we call, and you're so much fun!
