Boater gets lost in Prince William Sound in new vessel

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Coast Guard launched a search this week for an Anchorage man who took a friend out for a ride in his new pleasure boat and got lost in Prince William Sound.

It was Chuck Oehler's first outing in the 18-foot boat when he and Craig Doty set out from Whittier Monday evening. They eventually became disoriented and were running low on gas, so they radioed the Coast Guard office in Valdez.

The Coast Guard broadcast an urgent call, asking nearby boaters to look for the pair. Four vessels responded, but while they were still searching, Oehler radioed the Valdez office again to report he had run out of gas, according to the Coast Guard.

Oehler had personal flotation devices on board but no anchor or navigational equipment, the Coast Guard said.

Crewmen aboard a fifth vessel spotted Oehler and Doty in Port Wells about 10:30 p.m. and towed the boat back to Whittier.
