Sears to host fund-raising carnival

Sears Elementary School will host its annual carnival from 5 to 8 p.m. today. The event will include prizes, games and food. All funds raised will help pay for end-of-the-year field trips.

Peninsula historical societies to meet in Hope

The Hope and Sunrise Historical Society is sponsoring a peninsula-wide historical meeting Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Hope Social Hall. Activities will include coffee, live music, lunch, and a tour of the gold rush town of Sunrise.

WalkAmerica slated for Saturday

WalkAmerica, a fund-raiser for the March of Dimes fight to save babies, will be Saturday. Registration begins at 10 a.m. in the Big Kmart parking lot. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. and conclude with a hot dog feed in the parking lot. Central Kenai Peninsula residents walking with company teams or as individuals are expected to raise up to $15,000 for the peninsula. Apple grafting workshop planned

The annual apple grafting workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the O'Brien Orchard. For more information or to register, call 776-8726.

Free skate day planned

A free skate day will be held at Alaska Great Skate in Soldotna Sunday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Soldotna Elks Lodge. Hot dogs, drinks, games and prizes will be available. For more information, call Rodny at 262-1355 or 252-2143.

Benefit auction scheduled

A Chinese auction for Marge Kraus will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the J-Bar-B, Mile 101.5 of the Sterling Highway. All funds raised will go to help pay medical expenses for Kraus' surgery and hospital expenses for her husband, Bill, who died in an automobile accident on the way to the hospital to visit her. Items for the auction can be dropped off at the J-Bar-B, or call 262-9887 or 262-9692 to arrange for pick up.

Center to sponsor seminar on professionalism

The Center for Mediation and Community Dialogue will sponsor a free seminar at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kenai River Center on Funny River Road, across from the Soldotna Airport.

Soldotna Police Chief Shirley Gifford will address professionalism in the workplace, communications and leadership. She has spoken on the subject to several groups within the city of Soldotna and for the Department of Public Safety.

There will be refreshments, dialogue and a presentation designed to enhance professionalism and leadership skills.

CIRCAC committee to meet

The Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council's Environmental Monitoring Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Kenai. The public is welcome to attend. For more information, call 283-7222 or 1-800-652-7222.

MAPTS offering installer training

Mining and Petroleum Training Service will present the final certified installer training of the season from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. May 10 at MAPTS Life Safety Institute on Marathon Road in Kenai. Informational rafting trip planned

The Kenai Watershed Forum is sponsoring an informational Kenai River rafting trip with local historian Gary Titus. The trip will take place June 2 and will run from Cooper Landing to Skilak Lake. City officials in Soldotna remind residents planning garage and yard sales that signs may not be placed in the street rights of way or posted on utility poles. All improperly placed signs may be removed without notice.
