The Soldotna and Nikiski boys high school soccer teams played to a 1-1 draw in a Northern Lights Conference-Southern Division match Tuesday in Nikiski.
In other NLC-South matches Tuesday, Soldotna defeated Nikiski 11-2, the Homer girls beat Skyview 3-0, and the Skyview boys defeated Homer 3-2.
Christos Asimakopoulos scored for the Stars in the 10th minute, with an assist from Anthony Griglione.
The Bulldogs were able to equalize with eight minutes left in the match when Israel Blatchford found Kenny Fagan with a corner kick. Fagan scored on a header.
“They played real well,” said Nikiski coach Jim Coburn. “They were a little worn down from playing five games in the last six days.”
Coburn said his team was able to grind out the game in the midfield.
“I don’t think we had as many opportunities as they did, and Rick Miller had a really good game in goal again,” Coburn said.
Soldotna coach Jeff Siemers said he would have liked to have seen his team make more of their chances.
“We had quite a few opportunities that we did not capitalize on,” Siemers said.
Siemers credited midfielder Brook Carver and sweeper Kevin Laurion with playing a solid match. The Stars, 2-4-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the division, will play Skyview Thursday at Soldotna.
Coburn said he was pleased with the play of Blatchford and Fagan, as well as that of midfielders Wiley Bennett and Nick Kellie, and fullback Ian Krogseng.
The Bulldogs, 3-0-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the division, will make a three-game trip to Mat-Su starting Thursday at Houston.
Soldotna girls coach Jimmy Love said he didn’t think his team played a great first half, but was pleased to see his squad come together and start moving the ball in the second half.
The Stars are 4-3-0, while the Bulldogs drop to 0-5.
