Community wildfire planning meetings set

Planning meetings for nine community groupings on the Kenai Peninsula are being held this week. Ecology and Environment Inc., on behalf of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, is hosting its second round of community meetings to continue developing individual community wildfire protection plans.

The meetings provide an opportunity for community-based forest planning and prioritization under the Healthy Forests Restoration Act. The plans may address issues such as wildfire response, hazard mitigation, community preparedness and structure protection. All meetings are open to the public.

Meetings will be held at the following locations and times: for the Ninilchik, Clam Gulch and Ninilchik area at 1 p.m. today at the Ninilchik Senior Citizens Center; for the Anchor Point, Happy Valley and Nikolaevsk area at 7 p.m. today at the Anchor River Inn; for the Moose Pass, Crown Point and Primrose areas at 7 p.m. Thursday at Moose Pass Elementary; for the Fritz Creek, Fox River and East End Road areas at 3 p.m. Friday at the McNeil Canyon School; and for the Homer, Diamond Ridge and Kachemak areas at 7 p.m. Friday in the city of Homer council chambers.

Day of prayer slated

The National Day of Prayer will be Thursday. Area organizations and churches will host observances at the following locations and times: city of Kenai at noon at the flag pole at the Legislative Affairs Building, 145 Main Street Loop; from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Peninsula Grace Brethren Church, 44175 Kalifornsky Beach Road, Soldotna; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Church of God, 105 Redoubt Ave. in Soldotna; and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Soldotna Bible Chapel, 300 W. Mother's Day breakfast planned

There will be a Mother's Day breakfast buffet with salad bar at the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The senior center is on Island Lake Road off the Kenai Spur Highway. The buffet costs $8 and admission for children 8 and under is $1 per years of age.

Treasure sale coming up

The Soldotna Senior Citizens Center's Trash and Treasure sale is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 14. There is a bake sale and festive menu. Tables are available for $10. To reserve a table and for more information, call 262-2322.
