FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The towns of Central and Circle were temporarily cut off from road access to the rest of Alaska Friday after ice clogged several culverts sending water rushing across the road.
The Department of Transportation ordered the road closed north of Mile 57 on Thursday afternoon. It reopened Friday afternoon, although DOT officials said numerous muddy spots remained. Due to poor conditions, some stretches were limited to one lane only.
DOT foreman Ben Stewart said there had been at least five washouts along the highway where culverts had clogged with ice, leading to deep water crossing the road.
On Friday, some water still spanned the road at Mile 67, officials said.
