Season heats up for SoHi, SkyHi track teams

Sunny day, 60 degree temperatures produce hot times for Goldstein, Shields, Fehrer

Members of the Soldotna and Skyview track and field teams finally got a nice day to show their stuff, and the two teams responded.

On a sunny Tuesday with a light wind and temperatures in the 60s, Soldotna junior Ari Goldstein and Skyview senior Kaleb Shields both posted state-best times, while Skyview junior Ella Fehrer lowered her school record in the 300-meter hurdles and set a new school record in the 100 hurdles.

The meet was a dual meet between Soldotna and Skyview, but no team scores were kept.

Goldstein, who ran state-best times in the 800 and 1,600 up in Anchorage Saturday, added the 3,200 to her credit when she was clocked at 11 minutes, 19.0 seconds.

The scary part is Goldstein could have run the race a lot faster, according to Soldotna coach Mark Devenney. Goldstein was pacing teammate Brittany Osland in the early part of the race before bolting en route to her state best.

"She could have ran 10:50, easy," Devenney said.

Shields was timed at 15.0 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 41.0 seconds in the 300 hurdles. Both were his fastest of the year.

"Everybody was running faster times and throwing longer distances, but that's because we finally had a warm day," Skyview coach Rob Sparks said.

Those dropping a lot of time included Fehrer. Despite breaking both records, Fehrer finished second to Soldotna's Tracy Pitts in both hurdles events.

"It's nice having somebody to push me like that," Fehrer said of Pitts. "I don't have a problem losing to her. I'm a junior and she's a senior, and we're both working as hard as we can.

"I can earn my spot next year."

In the 300 hurdles, Fehrer said she has been running at about 51 seconds all year. However, Tuesday she dropped to 49.1 to lower her own school record of 50.04.

In the 100 hurdles, Fehrer had been tied with Lisa Dahlgren for the school record at 17.6 seconds. Tuesday, she came through with a time of 17.2 seconds.

Other highlights for Devenney included:

The performance of freshmen Kaylee Wilbanks and Alyssa Emery in the discus. Wilbanks increased her personal best to 110 feet, 1 inch, while Emery went 103-0.

Alex Pfaffe running 16.7 seconds in the 110 hurdles.

Katy Pankoski running a 5:48.5 in the 1,600 to win the event despite the fact that she hadn't run it before.

Patrick Lybrand going 39-1 1-2 in the triple jump. Heading into the weekend, that was the best mark in Region III.

Meanwhile, Sparks said Greg Bosick had a good day in the triple jump with his mark of 36-10 1-2.
