JUNEAU (AP) -- A new commander is taking the helm of the 17th Coast Guard District, which covers Alaska.
Rear Adm. James W. Underwood is relieving Rear Adm. Tom Barrett, recently named vice commandant for the Coast Guard in Washington, D.C. The change of command ceremony will be held Monday in Juneau.
Underwood was based in Cordova from 1984 to 1987, commanding the Sweetbrier, a buoy tender.
He later commanded vessels in South Carolina and Florida.
His most recent assignment was as director of the Office of Intelligence and National Security for Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.
