Grace sweeps Seward Invitational

In a tight finish in both the boys and girls competitions, Grace Christian narrowly escaped with both victories on Tuesday in the one-day Seward Invitational at Seward High School.

The Grace boys won with 125 points, just two points ahead of Seward (123) and 23 ahead of Skyview (102). Anchorage Christian Schools took fourth with 98 points, Soldotna finished fifth with 85, Heritage Christian placed sixth (53), Ninilchik seventh (50) and Nikiski eighth (13).

On the girls side, the Grizzlies earned 151 points, barely edging ACS, which accumulated 150. Skyview finished third with 93.5, followed by Soldotna (76), Seward (47.5), Heritage (28), Nikiski (25) and Ninilchik (25).

Travis Price led the Seahawks by winning the 800 with a time of 1:58.1, winning the long jump with a leap of 19-4.25 and finishing first in the triple jump with a leap of 41-6. Also for Seward, Dylan Beck won the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.1 seconds, placed second in the 110 hurdles and finished second in the high jump; Andrew Buchanan took second in the 1,600; the 1,600 relay team, comprised of Beck, Price, Jacob Marshall and Brett Chase, placed first with a time of 3:42.7, and the 3,200 relay team, made up of Buchanan, Chase, Marshall and Austin Gillespie, also won in 8:55.5.

Soldotna's Colton Schneider won the 200 with a time of 24.4 seconds; Aaron Gordon placed second in the 100; Tyler McGillivary took third in the 100; Tanner Minogue placed second in the discus; Alex Kauffman finished third in the triple jump; and the 400 and 800 relay teams, both made up of Caleb Murray, Jared Lingafelt, Marques Roberts and Jared Duncan, placed first in 47.9 seconds and 1:39.7, respectively.

Skyview's Michael Thornton won the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.4 seconds and also finished fourth in the 300 hurdles; Keny Mahan won the shot put and discus with tosses of 40-0.25 and 126-1, respectively; Daniel Rozak placed third in the 400; Cody Williams finished third in the 1,600; and Braden Holt placed third in the 3,200. Ninilchik's Cody Presley finished second in the 200 and third in the long jump, while Jefferson Klapak took second in the 3,200.

On the girls side, Skyview had Ivy O'Guinn win both the 800 and 1,600 with times of 2:25.8 and 5:21.2, respectively; Paris Cooper finish second in both the 100 and 200; Casee Penrod take third in the triple jump; the 400 relay team, comprised of Amanda McDowell, Megan Janorschke, Alicia West and Penrod, place first in 54.3 seconds; and the 800 relay team, made up of Janorschke, West, McDowell and Cooper, win in 1:56.3.

Soldotna's Shannon Wyatt won the 3,200 in 13:22.5; Melanie Smith took second in the 1,600; Jessica Duke placed second in the discus; April Heffner placed second in the 300 hurdles; Mariah Ulen finished second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles; and Megan Gordon placed third in the long jump. Nikiski had Megan Hansen finish second in the shot put and fourth in the discus, while teammate Kassandra Johnson finished fifth in the shot and third in the discus. Seward's Samantha Feemster won the 400 with a time of 1:05 and Ninilchik's Brianna Goins won the high jump with a leap of 4-6 and finished fourth in the triple jump.

Homer boys win, girls tie

Colin Andrews and Nick Montiero each scored in the second half in leading the Mariners to a 2-0 nonconference win over visiting Ketchikan on Wednesday. Andrews' goal came just four minutes into the second half, while Montiero struck in the 73rd minute.

Corine Ogle scored in the 71st minute in helping the Homer girls forge a 1-1 tie with the Kings, who scored just 14 minutes in.
