Oilers add to bullpen
The Oilers have added more strength to their 2001 bullpen with the signing of Cal State Fullerton freshman Chad Cordero. The 6-foot-0 right-hander from Chino, Calif., has appeared in over half of the Titans games, compiling some very impressive stats, including 27 appearances, 43 innings pitched, 10 saves, 42 strikeouts, only eight walks and an earned run average of 1.66. The San Diego Padres drafted Cordero in 2000.
Reliever Thom Ott of the University of Nebraska had a memorable day Saturday. The 6-3 right-hander won his fourth game and saved his seventh game as the Cornhuskers swept a doubleheader from Oklahoma State.
Prospective 2001 Oilers starting pitcher Neal Cotts of Illinois State University is drawing a lot of interest from pro scouts. The junior has a record of 7-2 with 98 strikeouts in 75 innings.
Chris Mabeus of Soldotna upped his record to 8-0 on the season as his Lewis-Clark State College National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics team shut out Division Is Washington State Cougars Saturday.
The 2001 season will be getting under way with the preseason four-team Oilers Hardball Tournament scheduled for June 8 through 10. The annual benefit game held each year against the American Legion Post 20 Twins will follow June 11. June 12 will be the official start of the season with the Oilers hosting the Ukiah Eagles of Mendicino, Calif. The yearly official opening game will again be sponsored by Country Foods, Coca-Cola and the Peninsula Clarion with tickets, fun, giveaways and a general good time provided by those fine sponsors.
The Oilers 19th annual Gusher will be held Saturday at the Kenai Armory. There are still a few tickets left but they probably wont last much longer as the annual fund-raising dinner/dance is once again sure to be sold out. For tickets or information see your favorite member of the Oilers Board of Directors or stop by the Oilers office on the corner of Cook and Main Streets in Kenai, or phone 283-7133.
Oilers Corner is provided in the offseason by Mike Baxter, the baseball operations manager of the Alaska Baseball League team.
