Former Alaska resident Carole Marie (Lokken) Zietlow died Sunday, April 18, 2004, surrounded by her children at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was 71.
Mrs. Zietlow was born July 29, 1932, to Ingvald and Irma Lokken in Hendricks, Minn., and was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended grade school in Brookings Country, S.D., and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. She graduated from Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, Minn., continuing her secondary education at Martin Luther College, after which she taught elementary education at various Christian day schools throughout Wisconsin.
On Aug. 20, 1955, she was married to Rev. David Zietlow. Upon his graduation from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, the family moved to Winnett, Mont., where Mr. Zietlow served as the pastor for number of Lutheran churches. In December of 1967, the family moved to Anchorage, where Mr. Zietlow had accepted the calling to start a mission church. Mrs. Zietlow embraced the Alaska lifestyle, enjoying whatever activities she could fit into her schedule.
Upon retirement from their service at Faith Lutheran Church in Anchorage, Mr. and Mrs. Zietlow moved to their second home on the banks of the Kenai River in Soldotna, where they were avid fishers and active members of Grace Lutheran Church. After the death of her husband on June 10, 1998, Mrs. Zietlow remained in Soldotna and enjoyed time with her grandchildren and friends.
In July of 2001, she moved back to Brookings, where she was an active member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church. During her years in Brookings, she especially enjoyed the time spent with her siblings, hosting her vacationing children and grandchildren, playing cards, working in her garden and baking apple pies with her sister Elaine.
Mrs. Zietlow was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
She is survived by her seven children and their spouses, Carrie and David Niemi of LaCrosse, Wisc., Rev. Peter and Lauren Zietlow of Sheridan, Wyo., Rev. Hans and Amy Zietlow of Onalaska, Wisc., Todd and Karen Zietlow of Anchorage, Tom and Tracy Zietlow of Anchorage, Jane and Mike Dorman of Soldotna and Rev. Jonathan and Rachel Zietlow of Lexington, Ky; and 24 grandchildren.
