Neither wind nor rain could keep the Kenai Central High School boys and girls teams from claiming the team titles at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Track and Field Meet on Saturday at Skyview High School.

“Everything was better in the wind (during Friday’s preliminaries). I think these kids wish it was windy every meet,” said Kenai coach Tim Sandahl when asked if his athletes took advantage of the window of pleasant weather during Saturday’s finals to post some good times.

“Oh my gosh, yeah,” said Kenai’s Candace Walker, who won the girls 100- and 200-meter races and ran on the winning 400 and 800 relays. “I love it when it’s nasty weather. It makes me feel better. After I’ve warmed up, it’s just that cool outside and warm inside feeling.”

Walker said she liked having a tailwind for Friday’s preliminaries — she ran 26.64 seconds in the 200 preliminary, compared to 27.44 in the final, and 12.96 compared to 13.54 in the 100.

“You gotta love Alaska,” she said as the rain that held off for most of Saturday afternoon started falling as the 200, the meet’s penultimate event, got under way.

Of course, there were other runners who were more than happy to be competing under clear skies that greeted competitors at the start of Saturday’s competition.

“There’s no wind at all. It’s different than every other race this year, where we’ve had to run into the wind at some point,” said Kenai Brad Denesen, who finished second in the 1,600 with a personal-best time of 4:55.04. “It helps keep your muscles warm. Your muscles don’t tighten up.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s always been windy or cold, so it’s about time we’ve had nice weather for a meet.”

Denesen, like many other athletes competing Saturday, also had to take the SAT’s in the morning before rushing over to Skyview for the meet.

“I didn’t expect to do well at all, so that was pretty exciting,” Denesen said of his race result after taking the test all morning.

Also for the Kenai boys, Levi Sutton won the 400 in 53.70, shaking off the cold that’s been making the rounds, and Jed McGlasson and Corey Rainey finished one-two in the 300 hurdles. McGlasson clocked 42.18 seconds, with Rainey crossing the line five-hundredths of a second later.

Kyle Coleman took the high jump at 6 feet, Bill Chimphalee won the long jump at 19-7, and Stephen Wilson won the triple jump with a leap of 42-1 1/2. Papapa Nicholas gave the Kardinals wins in seven individual events by taking the shot put (54-7) and the discus (162-7).

The Soldotna boys finished second in the team standings and picked up their big points in the relays. Individual 100-meter champion Kelly Seggerman teamed with Aleks Pfaffe, Patrick Lybrand and Marvin Tate to win the 400 relay (45.71) and the 800 (1:36.41) relay. Pfaffe, Lybrand, Caleb Chase and Jason Beals wrapped up the meet with a victory in the 1,600 relay (3:39.39).

“Our relay teams are all pretty inexperienced. It’s nice that it’s all coming together at the end of the season. That’s what we planned, to have our best races at the end of the year,” Seggerman said.

Seggerman said the Stars have put quite a bit of work into their baton handoffs.

“Relays are all about handoffs. If you have a smooth handoff, you don’t have to have the four fastest kids,” Seggerman said.

Of course, the Stars are no slouches when it comes to speed. Seggerman took the 100 in 11.72, and Pfaffe won the 110 hurdles in 15.84.

David Apperson led Seward with wins in the 800 (2:07.92) and the 1,600 (4:53.88), and Matt Nyholm took the 3,200 in 10:49.32.

Sandahl said he was thrilled to see the Kenai girls come through with a borough championship, noting he was impressed to see the Kardinals win the title by picking up most of their points in the running events.

“I can’t say I came in here with the expectation of both teams winning. I’m going to sleep well tonight,” Sandahl said.

Walker teamed with Amber McGlasson, Kalee Alsworth and Eliza Chadwick to take the 400 relay (53.75) and the 800 relay (1:53.34).

McGlasson also won the 100 hurdles, returning from an injury to run 17.07.

Brooke Forsi won the 400 in 1:02.24, a step ahead of Kenai’s Lauren Baldwin, and Seward dominated the middle distance and distance events. Rubye Foldager won the 800 (2:30.00), and Denali Foldager won the 1,600 (5:34.07), 3,200 (12:19.72), and the 300 hurdles (48.45).

Skyview’s Jennifer Holland had a good meet, winning both the high jump and the triple jump, and the quartet of Ariel Barker, Marquee Lucas, Kendra Merkes and Alex West won the 1,600 relay in 4:39.32.

Paige Blackburn won the throwing events for the Stars, taking the shot put with a toss of 38-2, and the discus with a mark of 107-7. Ashley Bartolowits scored a borough title for Ninilchik with her winning leap of 15-4 in the long jump.
