Jobs need to stay local

Posted: Thursday, May 07, 2009

It is a real sad situation with Tesoro on their turnaround going on now at the plant in Nikiski.

Not giving an opportunity for local citizens to go to work and the hiring of hundreds of people from the Lower 48 to do the work is a slap in the face to all Alaskans.

I have no problem with people being brought in to do the work, if the local and Alaska job pool cannot fill all the positions that are required. With 15 percent unemployment here on the Kenai we should look right here to fill these jobs.

I am kind of curious, with all the money Tesoro is saving on labor costs and with outsiders taking Alaska jobs, are we going to see Lower 48 gas prices here in Alaska?

One item to remember is that money paid to local residents goes through our local economy six times and does not just go Outside like what is happening now. Where are our local government leaders and state legislators on this issue? The silence is unbelievable.
