Two escape Kodiak fire

Posted: Monday, May 08, 2000

KODIAK (AP) -- A mother and infant escaped injury, but one of their two dogs perished in a house fire Sunday night.

Firefighters spent about a half hour battling the blaze, which started in the basement of the house, owned and occupied by Mario and JoAnn Alvarez.

''The cause of the fire is not known yet,'' said Kodiak fire chief Joe Hart.

When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming out of the upper parts of the house and found flames at the front door and coming out of the basement stairwell when they entered the building.

''There are char marks on the outside of the structure and we had to break out some of the windows to ventilate,'' Hart said.

He estimated losses at $50,000, saying there was extensive damage from heat and smoke.
