Herring fishing opened at Togiak during the weekend

DILLINGHAM (AP) -- Herring fishing opened at Togiak over the weekend.

About 70 Seiners had a brief opening Saturday evening and caught about 1,300 tons with a 10.4 percent mature roe content.

Seiners had another 10 minutes Sunday afternoon to bring their combined total catch to approximately 6,700 tons.

The estimated 202 gillnetters on the grounds had a four-hour opener Sunday.

The latest biomass estimates from state Fish and Game aerial surveys Friday showed more than 40,000 tons of fish on the grounds.

The sac roe quota this year for Alaska's largest herring fishery is almost 23,000 tons, but limited processing capacity could mean fishermen will not be able to reach that goal.
