The 2001 Soldotna Drag racing season is officially off and running thanks to the Kenai Peninsula Racing Lions. Showing off the local machines is first on the schedule of events that leads up to the first tire burning event to be held at the Soldotna Airport June 23&24, according to Michelle Banta a member of the Racing Lions. This year for the first time, youngsters ages 8-16 will participate in the Jr. Dragsters division, "They use a Briggs & Stratton single cylinder motor that is built into a kit car, but they can build them all the way up to blown alcohol and reach top speeds of 70mph in an eighth of a mile," said Banta.
The highlight of the season will be the second annual Mayors Race, which was a huge success last year. "There will be a special purse paid to the winning mayor to be donated to their favorite charity, plus a year's worth of bragging rights. This is a family oriented club, and it's getting more popular each year," added Banta. Anyone interested in motorsports activities is invited to join the new Peninsula Racing Lions and become involved in the family oriented club. The Drag Racing Division meets the first Thursday of the month at HEA in Kenai at 7:00pm.
