Soldotna Police Clean up the neighborhood

Posted: Tuesday, May 08, 2001

For the second year members of the Soldotna Police Department and their families have reached out to their neighbor Vera Horwarth, at Vera's Variety, for a spring spruce up and barbecue. "We love Vera! At Christmas time she always sends over a lovely poinsettia plant, she bakes cookies for us, and she's just a wonderful lady and a good neighbor to us," said Chief Shirley Warner. Vera is now in her nineties and still very active in community activities. Sgt. Marvin Towell was the appointed chef for the afternoon's barbecue cooking up a bunch of hamburgers and hot dogs to satisfy the appetite of the officers and their families after a good afternoon of raking and picking up the winter left-overs along Wilson Street. "This is great, we like to do something to give back to the community, this has been our project the last couple of years. It's not much, but we like to do something and this has been a fun way of getting to know eachother's families a little better and working together," said Towell.
