Hard to imagine another winter has passed and the golf course has opened.
Saturday was the opening day for the 2002 golfing season at Birch Ridge Golf Course while the seniors kicked off the 2002 Senior League on Monday.
It's early in the year (at least for those of us in Alaska) and there are a few questions we always ask.
Like, is the driving range open? Yes it is open. How many greens are we playing on? All nine greens are currently open. What hours is the golf course open? The Pro Shop is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. These hours will adjust as the days get longer. Do I need a tee time? Yes, call Birch Ridge Golf Course (262-5270) to schedule a tee time.
Senior League began play on Monday with four hearty souls and their trusty administrator showing up to play.
Playing under a slight rain, with air temperatures hovering around a moderate 39 degrees, Chuck Rider was able to capture low net, closest to the pin on hole 6 and the longest putt. Preventing Chuck from a complete sweep of the first day's festivities was Dave Stein who put his ball close on No. 8.
While Dave, Chuck and the rest of the gang where out on the course, Gordon Briscoe was hard at work getting the administrative tasks taken care and ready for the rest of the season.
Men's League began on Wednesday.
Morning Ladies League play begins on Tuesday.
Birch Ridge Cup will begin on May 23 for the ladies and May 27 for the men. Contact the Pro Shop to sign up and for further details.
Junior Golf clinics will begin on June 10. There will be two sessions this summer, a beginner's clinic on June 10 followed by a skilled clinic on June 17.
Details on the junior golf clinics can be found in the Peninsula Clarion's upcoming " Just Kiddin'" special section, by calling Birch Ridge Golf Course, or in future columns.
The Hospice Auction and Putting Contest will be on May 17 from 3 to 7 p.m. Contact a Hospice Board member or Birch Ridge Golf Course for details.
There will be a Nike demonstration day held sometime around the third week in May. Either stay tuned to this column or call the Pro Shop to get the particulars.
Give yourself a little extra time before you tee off to stop by to see the latest in golf fashions, clubs, and bags at the Pro Shop.
