Soldier returns home

The Friends and Allies Fund will sponsor a "hero's welcome home" celebration Saturday for Amie Joy of Soldotna.

Joy, a 2000 Skyview High School graduate, is a 3rd class petty officer in the U.S. Navy who has been stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Persian Gulf for the past 10 months.

She will spend four days with her parents, Bob and Angie Joy of Soldotna, and reunite with her now 1-year-old daughter. Joy and her daughter then will return to the Navy base in Everett, Wash.

The celebration Saturday is scheduled to start between 9 and 9:30 a.m., when Joy drives into town. She will stop at a parking lot just north of town to climb into a decorated Thunderbird convertible, provided by Great Bear Ford, and drive down the hill into Soldotna in parade fashion.

The public is invited to attend Joy's homecoming at the intersection of the Kenai Spur and Sterling highways in Soldotna. The Friends and Allies Fund is asking for donations of size 24-months girls clothing for Joy's daughter.

"Baby's outgrown everything," said Teri Stickler of the fund. "It's so Mom doesn't have to be overwhelmed as she reunites with her daughter."
