O'Guinn, Flanagan take 3 events: Kenai's Spalding triumphs 4 times

Posted: Sunday, May 09, 2010

Lierin Flanagan and Ivy O'Guinn will be running track at the collegiate level next year. For anyone attending the 2010 Kenai Peninsula Borough Track Meet at Nikiski High School on Friday and Saturday, that should come as no surprise.

Kenai's Shaynee DeVito clears a barrier in the 300-meter hurdles preliminary Friday afternoon at the Kenai Peninsula Borough track and field meet at Nikiski High School.

Each won three individual events. Flanagan, Kenai Central's top sprinter, won the 100-meter dash, 200 and 400. She was also part of the winning 800 relay team along with Leah Sandahl, Shaynee DeVito and Bailey Beeson. Kenai won the girls team title with 151 points. Skyview took second and Soldotna finished third.

O'Guinn, Skyview's distance specialist, won the 3,200, 1,600 and 800. She also took third in the 400 in her first time competing in the event.

As a senior, Flanagan said her final year of high school track is all about giving 100 percent.

"Senior year is a year you need a do-or-die attitude," she said. "You have to give it your all. What do you have to lose?"

It's that attitude that's led to her success this season, Kenai track coach Tim Sandahl said.

"She works so hard in practice," he said.

Others on the team see Flanagan's work ethic and their times have all dropped as a result of her leadership, Sandahl said.

Flanagan said she's set a goal for herself to win the 200 and 400 at state this year. She'd also like to defend her state title in the 1,600 relay. Flanagan was part of last year's record-setting team.

In Friday's 400 preliminary race, Flanagan ran a 56.84, beating the current state record of 57.14 set by Bartlett's Andrea Crook in 2006. However, state records can only be set at state meets.

"The state of Alaska does not see times in the 56s," Sandahl said. "That is just rare."

Next year, Flanagan will run for Montana State University, an NCAA Division I program.

"I'm just so excited," she said. "I'm just so proud of myself. That's been my goal since I started running."

O'Guinn has committed to the University of Alaska Anchorage, an NCAA Division II program. O'Guinn said she used the borough meet to work on her speed for next week's Region III meet in Palmer. O'Guinn, the reigning state champion in the 800, said she focused in particular on that event.

"Next weekend my 800 will be really fast," she said.

In addition to defending her title, O'Guinn said she'd like to end her high school track career with a state win in the 3,200. Her final borough meet was a success, O'Guinn said.

"I'm very happy with today," she said. "I'm really proud of myself with all of the events I did this weekend."

"She did it all," Skyview track coach Rob Sparks said. "She's having a great senior year."

"She's not hard to coach," said Skyview's distance coach Ted McKenney. "She has a good work ethic, a tremendous attitude and she's a very gifted runner."

Seward's Alison Barnwell finished third in the 800 and 1,600 and second in the 3,200. SoHi's Mariah Ulen won the 300 hurdles and high jump. Nikiski's Megan Hansen won the shot put. SkyHi's Casee Penrod won the triple and long jump events.

Ninilchik's Brianna Goins finished second in the high jump and triple jump.

On the boys side, Kenai's Tyler Spalding followed his four wins at the Skyview Invite with a repeat performance. He took first in all three jumping events and the discus. Spalding contributed 40 of Kenai's 116 team points by himself.

"I hope he can do that at regions and at state," Sandahl said.

Sandahl said Spalding has a great chance for high finishes and potential wins in the jumping events at state.

"I'm really happy with the boys," he added.

Skyview's boys won the team title with 135 points. Kenai was second and SoHi finished third.

Sparks said he had contributions from his entire team to help get the win.

"We did well in sprinting. Our distance kids stepped up. We scored in every event," he said. "That's really where you start to get team scores."

With just one senior and two juniors, SkyHi's track future looks bright, Sparks said.

Jasen Sounveri took first in the 100 and 200 for the Panthers. SoHi's Colton Schneider won the 400. Kenai's Billy Kiefer won the 800 and 1,600. Like O'Guinn, Kiefer will run track for UAA next year.

"I'm excited," he said. "They have a great track program."

Homer's Ross Kalke won the shot put. CIA's Josh Holly finished second in the 800 and third in the 1,600 and 3,200. Ninilchik's Jack Wheeler took second in the high jump.

Seward's Brett Chase and Austin Gillespie turned in second-place finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200 respectively. Jesse Atherton took second in the shot put.

Sandahl said the meet was a good way to get his team ready for the final two meets of the season.

"I love the borough meet," he said. "It has the feel of a big meet. It's great preparation for the region meet."
