Helena and Myra Ramos of Don Jose's
May 11th may not be Mother's Day, but it is the day the Ramos family, owners of Don Jose's in Soldotna, is dedicating to help Helena Ramos raise funds to help offset the expense of a kidney transplant she will be having in September. "We are very fortunate, my uncle Ernie Ramos is a perfect donor match and is going to be donating his kidney to my mother so we are trying to raise money to help with the expenses of the surgery and hospitalization because we don't have insurance," said Myra Ramos, Helena's daughter who works with the family at the restaurant. According to Myra, medications alone prior to, during, and after the surgery can range from $500 - $3,000 a month depending on general health and complications.
Earlier this spring the Soldotna Lions, who meet weekly at Don Jose's, held a $2,000 gift certificate benefit raffle and will be donating the proceeds to assist the Ramos family.
Wednesday, May 11th, which is Helena's birthday, the family is having a special benefit dinner at their restaurant all day long from 11:00am - 10:30pm featuring a variety of dishes all for $10.00, "We'll be featuring Arroz con Pollo (chicken and rice) Chile Verde (green chili) Carne con Papas (meat and potatoes), all of the dishes will include tortillas beans and rice. Whatever is made that day will go directly to my Mom," said Myra. Don Jose's is located in Soldotna on the Sterling Highway next to Hutching's Cheverolet & Cadillac.
