Illegal immigration solution: Mexico as our 51st state

Posted: Wednesday, May 10, 2006

Out of the mouths of babes. My son Brandon and I were talking recently about the illegal immigration problem and possible solutions, and he said why not bring Mexico in as the 51st state?

I assume the majority of the estimated 11 million illegals are from Mexico. If Mexico does not want to take back 10 million-plus of their citizens who are in the United States illegally, and I assume they would not because it would probably send their struggling economy down the tubes, let’s make all the Mexican people citizens of the United States.

It would be a win-win for all of us. Mexico’s President Fox could become governor of the new state of Mexico. All Mexican citizens, legals and illegals, would become American citizens with all the rights and responsibilities we all have.

Lots of jobs that are now sent overseas could be kept at home in Mexico, creating new opportunities and work for people currently struggling to clothe, feed and shelter their families. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to once again purchase something actually “Made in America.”

I’m quite sure lots of current Americans would flock to Mexico to recreate and retire with the prospect of being able to purchase land and build reasonably priced homes in a beautiful climate adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Think of the savings we would reap just in border patrol expenses. Our new border between the state of Mexico and Guatemala/Belize would be less than one-fourth the size of our current border that covers California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. A smaller border would be much more manageable, much less expensive and would most likely actually have a chance at stopping illegal immigration.

What percentage of those 11 million illegals are from Canada? Our 52nd state? Naw, the climate’s not near as nice!
