Iditarod champion to help with fundraiser
A benefit spaghetti dinner and auction will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the J Bar B at Mile 101.5 of the Sterling Highway. Proceeds will benefit the Leite family, whose house was destroyed by fire.

Borough to collect ice jam debris
The Kenai Peninsula Borough will provide dumpsters for debris from the Kenai River ice jam Friday and Saturday at Moose Range Meadows Public boat launch on Key Stone Drive, Morgan’s Landing on Scout Lake Loop and at the intersection of Scout Lake Loop and Huske Drive. No household or hazardous waste will be collected.
Material from the Funny River side will be collected May 18 and 19. For more information, call 260-4882.
Give mom the day off
The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will hold a Mother’s Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the center on Island Lake Road. The cost is $7.50 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 and under.
Homemade pies will be available for purchase.
Nursing homes celebration events set
Heritage Place will hold an open house to celebrate National Nursing Home Week “Treasure Our Elders” from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday and May 17. Special events include a Tree of Remembrance Ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, a Mayor’s Tea at 3 p.m. May 17 and a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 and 19.
Proceeds will support the Heritage Place’s Comfort Items fund.
Kenai Shorebird celebration set
Kenai Watershed Forum, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Keen-Eye Bird Club and Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center will host a Kenai Shorebird celebration Wednesday and May 19 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center.
The celebration and workshops are designed for all levels. Discussions and fieldtrips are planned.

Gardeners branching out
Central Peninsula Master Gardeners will host a tree workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. May 17 at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road. Stephen Nichols with Alaska Urban and Community Forestry will be the featured speaker. Nichols is an arborist and will discuss pruning and planting, varieties of trees and will answer tree care questions. For more information, call 262-5824.
Garage sale fundraiser planned
Kenai Elks Lodge will hold a garage sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 and 19. Donations for the sale are welcome.
Items may be dropped off at the lodge after 4 p.m. Monday through Friday before May 17. It is open to the public.
Motorcycle fundraiser goes full throttle
Throttle Thunder Relay, a fundraising event open to all types of makes of motorcycles, will be held May 19 and 20. The relay route begins in Fairbanks and ends at the Kenai Peninsula Harley-Davidson. Relay stops will be made at McKinley Harley-Davidson at Denali National Park, Denali Harley-Davidson in Wasilla and the overnight in Anchorage before closing ceremony at Kenai Peninsula Harley-Davidson. Participants may ride any portion of the route. Deadline to register is May 19.

Breastfeeding class offered

Free vision screening offered
Anchorage Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the District 49A Lions Clubs will hold a free low vision screening May 30 by appointment only. Screening will be provided by the center’s certified low vision therapist. It is open to the public. The results of an eye exam that has been conducted within the past year is required.
