Skyview, SoHi win borough crowns

Stars clinch ninth girls title in 11 years

Posted: Sunday, May 12, 2002

In the winter, Soldotna's Sasha Cvetkovski, Ari Goldstein and Janna Schaafsma were regulars in the Soldotna High School weight room.

Saturday, the three were regulars at the top of the awards podium in the girls half of the Kenai Peninsula Borough Track and Field Meet.

The trio combined to win eight individual events to lead the Stars to the borough crown. Soldotna scored 141 points to beat runner-up Nikiski by 44 points. It is the ninth girls title in SoHi coach Mark Devenney's 11 years at Soldotna.

"I think this shows the importance of offseason training," Schaafsma said. "Sasha, Ari and I all lift weights in the winter. Plus, Ari runs and we all do plyometrics."

Schaafsma, a senior, won four individual events on the day -- the 100-meter dash, 200, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. It was the first time she had won four individual events at the borough meet. Last year, she won four events but one was a relay.

Her most impressive time of the day came in the 300 hurdles. Schaafsma finished the event in 46.7 seconds. Heading into the weekend, that time would have been the best in the state by more than a second.

"Usually, I take 19 steps between hurdles," Schaafsma said. "Coach and I are working on cutting that down to 17 steps for the first five hurdles. Today, it went pretty smoothly."

Cvetkovski won the discus and shot put. Like Schaafsma, Cvetkovski improved one of her own state bests in the process. The senior did that with a toss of 116 feet, 6 inches, in the discus.

"It's pretty cool that what we did in the winter paid off," Cvetkovski said. "I thought that was really cool what happened with Ari in the mile. I thought that was probably the best race of the day."

In the 1,600, Goldstein shadowed fellow freshman Marci Mohler until 200 meters remained. Goldstein let fly with a strong, sustained kick over the last 200 meters and ended up finishing in 5:17 to defeat Mohler by 2 seconds and set a school record. Goldstein also won the 800 Saturday.

"This winter, I had to decide between skiing and doing things like weights and plyometrics for running," Goldstein said. "I was always leaning toward running, and today I was happy I made that decision.

"All the things I worked to improve on paid off today."

While Devenney said the big day for the big three was well-deserved, he also said there was more to Soldotna's victory than Schaafsma, Cvetkovski and Goldstein.

"In the paper tomorrow, it's going to be about those stars," Devenney said. "But we also got a lot of big points in the relays and the jumps. We had (personal records) all over the place. Those things add up."

Nikiski senior Sally Glaze won the long jump, triple jump and anchored the 800 relay to victory to lead the Bulldogs to their runner-up finish.

The other highlight of the meet came from Kenai junior Dallas Baldwin. Baldwin cleared 5-5 in the high jump to set a new state best.

"I wanted to jump 5-4 1/4 to break the school record," Baldwin said. "I did that by a couple of inches. I went right up to 5-5 and cleared that. I guess I'm peaking. Hopefully, it will stay like that for the next two weeks."
