Obituary

Posted: Wednesday, May 12, 2004

Longtime Soldotna resident Hilton C. Marchant died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. He was 80.

A private family service will be held at a later date, when family members will scatter his and his late wife, Freda's, ashes together.

Mr. Marchant was born Oct. 1, 1923, in McGrath, Minn., where he was raised and attended high school. He furthered his education by attending college in Minneapolis. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in July 1942 and served as a gunner on B-17 bombers during World War II. He received the Air Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and was honorably discharged in July 1945.

Mr. Marchant married Freda K. Peters on Dec. 1, 1945, and they moved to Oregon in 1946. He then started his career in the automotive field, which he worked in for 30 years. He moved to Fairbanks in 1967, then to Soldotna in 1977. Hilton worked as a Realtor and broker for 10 years and owned and operated H&M Realty before he retired from real estate sales in 1986. He was a past president of the Kenai Peninsula Board of Realtors.

Mr. Marchant enjoyed fishing, hunting, photography and genealogy. In 1981, he received a trophy certificate from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for catching a 75-pound king salmon while on the boat with his wife on the Kenai River.

"Dad was always an avid fisherman, from Minnesota Lake fishing to the Rogue River salmon and steelheads in Oregon to Alaska's great halibut and salmon. He always had time to take us kids fishing," his family said.

Mr. Marchant was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Freda K. Marchant, who died in January; brother, Leonard Marchant; and his parents, Charles Albert and Theresia Effie Marchant.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Sharon Marchant of Valdez and Al and Peggy Marchant of Soldotna; daughter, Kay Tordoff of Soldotna; brother and sister-in-law, Myron and Glenda Marchant of Coos Bay, Ore.; brother, Charles Marchant of Grants Pass, Ore.; grandsons, Scott Marchant of Oregon, Nathan Marchant of Fairbanks, Steven Marchant of Valdez, Charles Marchant of Cartersville, Ga., and Michael Garcia of Raleigh, N.C.; granddaughters, Melissa Wood and Kelly Glaspell, both of North Pole, Trudy Marchant of Fairbanks and Megan Marchant of Valdez; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sterling Senior Center, P.O. Box 154, Sterling, AK 99672 or by buying some bait and taking a child fishing.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
