Hikers out for a walk stumbled across human remains in a wooded area in Sterling on Sunday eve-ning.

Alaska State Troopers in Soldotna received a report that the remains of an adult male were found near Mile .2 of Grand View Drive, near the Sterling weigh station. The remains appeared to have been in that location for some time and were in an advanced stage of decomposition, according to troopers.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday in Anchorage at the State Medical Examiner's Office. The deceased has been tentatively identified, however, the name is not being released until next of kin have been notified.

Although a cause of death has not yet been established, foul play is not suspected at this time.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation also is handling the report.
