Region II track athletes qualify for state

Posted: Friday, May 12, 2006

Cook Inlet Academy’s Holly Kopp, Brooke Forsi and Nate Byrd, and Ashley Bartolowits of Ninilchik, assured themselves of berths at the state track and field championships by winning events at the Region II meet Wednesday and Thursday at Susitna Valley High School in Talkeetna.

Kopp won the girls 3,200 meters in 12 minutes, 22.48 seconds, and the 1,600 in 5:51.87. Forsi cruised to a win in the girls 400 in 1:02.60 and the 200 in 28.43. The two also teamed with Sharon Lindow and Ashley Michel to win the 400 relay in 57.52.

Byrd had the top throw in the discus with a mark of 129 feet, 5 inches.

Bartolowits won the girls long jump with a leap of 15-4 1/4.

Teams from Heritage Christian won both the girls and boys titles at the meet. The Cook Inlet girls were third with the Cook Inlet boys finished in a three-way tie for third. The Ninilchik girls were fifth, and the Ninilchik boys were sixth.

The top finisher in each race at each region meet receives a berth at the state championships, with the next 10 best times or distances from all region meets filling out the field. For relays, the winning team from each region advances to state, with the next two fastest times filling out the field.

The Region II meet was pushed up to midweek to accommodate student-athletes who also are participating in the state music festival this weekend. Athletes who did not win an event will have to wait until the rest of the region meets conclude this weekend to find out if they’ve qualified for the state meet.
