Mat-Su superintendent decides to quit

PALMER (AP) -- The superintendent of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District has resigned.

Pat Chesbro told KTUU-TV Saturday that she had made her decision for the good of the district, where she's worked for more that two decades. Before she was hired as superintendent, Chesbro was principal at Palmer High School. She has been superintendent since 2000.

The school board voted unanimously earlier this month to offer Chesbro a new two-year contract with a raise of $7,000 to a salary of $107,000 a year.

The offer came despite letters from unions for teachers, principals and other workers to the school board seeking her resignation.

Chesbro said then that the unions were trying to gain an advantage in contract talks.

But she told the school board in a closed session Friday that she had decided to leave, according to KTUU.
