Clam Gulch resident Ellen Marie Shettlesworth died Sunday, May 9, 2004, in Biggs, Calif., with her family at her side. She was 88.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 17, at Ramsey Funeral Home, 1175 Robinson St., in Oroville, Calif. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Shettlesworth was born in Crescent Mills, Calif., on Dec. 18, 1915, to William Leo and Susie Belle Stampfli, both pioneering families in the Indian Valley area. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1933 and worked in the Stockton, Calif., shipyards welding ammunition bays on the Liberty Ships during World War II.
She married James Shettlesworth in 1946, and in 1959, they moved with their three children to Alaska, where they homesteaded in Clam Gulch. In 1961, they bought a commercial fish site on Kalifornsky Beach, and the family operates it to this day.
Mrs. Shettlesworth was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1968.
She is survived by her children, Karen Gleason of Biggs, Renie Riccobuano of Yuba City, Calif., and Greg Shettlesworth of Denver; grandchildren, Stacy and James Casebeer of California, Troy Shettlesworth of Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., Nicole Fry of California, and Hollie Rioux and Brooke Shettlesworth of Colorado; and 10 great-grandchildren.
