ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A man was shot in the head and died Sunday night off the road at Mile 107 of the Seward Highway, said Alaska State Troopers.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, and another man were shooting at small pieces of firewood with a .357-caliber handgun, said Trooper Sgt. Lee Oly said.
Authorities were called about 5 p.m. when someone ran to the highway and flagged down a passing trooper, said spokesman Tim DeSpain.
The other man told troopers the two were target shooting, Oly said. He was being questioned by troopers Sunday evening.
The victim, who DeSpain said was about 19 years old, died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Oly said troopers are trying to determine whether the shooting was an accident, a suicide or a homicide.
