ANCHORAGE (AP) -- As much as 1,000 gallons of heating oil spilled at the Nulato school, state environmental officials said Tuesday.
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said the oil spilled from a cracked fuel line of the school's heating oil storage tank. The DEC and officials with the Yukon Koyokuk School District estimated the spill at between 500 and 1,000 gallons.
School district maintenance workers discovered the spill Sunday and reported it to the DEC the same day. Cleanup began Tuesday.
The spilled oil has saturated the gravel by the storage tanks and flowed into melt water, according to the DEC. The agency said the local water well is about two miles away and is not threatened by the spill.
