Former Fairbanks mayor gives U.S. Senate invocation

WASHINGTON (AP) A former Fairbanks mayor served as guest chaplain on the floor of the U.S. Senate Wednesday.

Jim Hayes gave the invocation at the invitation of U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, the president pro tempore.

Hayes is a three-term former mayor and currently pastor of the Lily of the Valley Church of Christ in Fairbanks.

He's also a member of the University of Alaska Board of Regents.

Hayes was visiting Washington to participate in the National African American Leadership Summit.
