Sponsoring organization: University of Alaska Anchorage
Description of event: This summer UAA is offering teens the opportunity to explore careers in aviation. Coinciding with the centennial anniversary of the first powered flight, UAA is offering "ACE Camp," an Aviation Career Education summer camp.
There will be four main career focuses: aircraft maintenance, professional pilot, aviation administration and air traffic control. Highlights of the camp include the chance to participate in an aviation "rodeo" in which students will fly in one of UAA's flight simulators. There are two 360-degree flight control tower simulators in the world. UAA houses one. Camp participants will take over the controls in the tower simulator and see just what the air traffic controller sees. Campers will visit the Alaska Challenger Learning Center in Kenai and Kulis Air National Guard Base.
And, as recognition of the 2003 Centennial Celebration of the Wright Brother's first flight at Kitty Hawk, a reception for the campers will be held at the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum.
Ages: High school juniors and seniors
Dates: June 20-25
Cost:$700 per student with some scholarships available. Cut-off date for applications is May 31.
Location: Aviation Technology Center adjacent to Merrill Field
Phone: (907) 264-7244
