Soldotna resident Verla Spaulding died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage due to a brain hemorrhage. She was 80.
An informal service for family and friends was held Sunday, May 11, at Cohoe Loop Beach setnet site.
Ms. Spaulding was born in Hillsdale, Okla., and moved to Soldotna in 1995.
She served in the Women's Army Air Force (WAAF). She also worked for the Sedgwick (Okla.) County Appraisers Office until her retirement in 1995.
She belonged to the St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church and the Fiber Friends weaving group. Her hobbies included weaving, hand dying silks and fabric, beading, reading, education and book making.
"Verla never saw a stranger; everyone was always welcome. She was an understanding grandmother, offering wisdom and support. She was a sincere friend, best friend and fun-loving grandmother and understanding mother," her family wrote.
She is survived by her children, Robert Spaulding of Lincoln, Neb., John Spaulding of Santa Cruz, Calif., Capt. Tom Spaulding of Key West, Fla., LuAnn Pauler of Dallas and Mike and Gemi Lea Spaulding of Soldotna; grandchildren, Ryan Spaulding of Lincoln, Gretchen Spaulding of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Sarah Giersch of Wichita, Kan., Toby and David Pauler of Dallas, Jessie and Amber Spaulding of Soldotna and Andrew and Aurora Spaulding of Tulare, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren.
