If you're looking for something different to do this weekend, you're in luck. The first "Taste of the Kenai" will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Soldotna Sports Center.
Organizers are billing the event as "a welcome diversion from the ho-hum."
Patterned after Anchorage's food show, organizers are hoping to increase demand for local products by familiarizing residents with the food and beverages peninsula businesses produce.
It's a great idea, especially since the event has been geared to the whole family. Kids can participate in cooking classes designed for them, plus express themselves with some cookie decorating.
While there will be lots of salmon and other seafood products to sample, there also will be a variety of other foods to tickle one's taste buds.
Hats off to organizers who, in providing a different kind of entertainment for residents, also are showcasing a variety of peninsula businesses. It's a wonderful way to learn more about this place we call home.
