Forum focuses on dividend, budget

Posted: Monday, May 15, 2000

Candidates for House Districts 7, 8 and 9 will be grilled at a candidate's forum tonight, mostly about the Alaska Permanent Fund.

Scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. at the King's Inn in Kenai, the forum is put together by the Save Your Dividend Committee, a local grass-roots group that rallied support to defeat the ballot measure on Sept. 14 that would've used a portion of permanent fund earnings to fund state government.

According to organizer Bill Parrish, a panel will ask the candidates their stand on using permanent fund earnings and how they propose to balance the state budget.

"We will ask them how they are going to fund government," Parrish said. "If they're really against tapping the dividend, how do they plan to fund roads and schools?"

Questions will not be allowed from the audience.

"We want to be really careful about that," Parrish said. "Some (candidates) spoke against the dividend in the past and we don't want some disgruntled person going off on and being rude to the candidates. This is strictly politics, it's not personal."

Parrish said the forum was organized so the group could better pick candidates to endorse in this year's elections. He said he did not consider the filing deadline when setting the date of the forum. The deadline for filing is June 1.

"This will actually be our second meeting," he said. "We met with four of the candidates already who were seeking our endorsement."

Linda and Carolyn Reynolds, both of Soldotna, Mike Chenault of Nikiski and Larry Smith of Cooper Landing, all Republicans, have sought the endorsement of Parrish's group. He said all the candidates for the three state House seats on the peninsula are aware of the forum, but he suspects some might choose not to attend.

"There may be a couple who don't want the endorsement of the 'No Committee,'" he said, using the casual name for the Save Your Dividend Committee.
