Birch Ridge Report: Birch Ridge golfer makes hole in one

Posted: Thursday, May 15, 2003

Newsflash We interrupt this article for an important announcement:

Tuesday evening, this writer and other members of the Birch Ridge Golf Association were winding down their monthly meeting when the telephone rang. Jay Kriner trusty cell phone in hand had just made a hole in one on No. 6. (Yes, there was a witness.)

We, of course, being golf traditionalists at heart, waited around for Jay to buy the customary make that mandatory refreshments. Kudos to you, Jay. Honk if you see him.

Opening day for the Senior League saw Dave Keating make the longest putt while Chuck Obendorf took all three honors of low handicap score and closest to the pin on holes six and eight. Chuck's been practicing, what?

The winning seniors on Tuesday included Don McGhee for lowest handicap score and closest to the pin on hole eight. Darell Jelsma drove closest on hole six while congrats go to Roger Jones for long putt.

Men's Night had a showing of quite a few proud players: Mike Hollingsworth came through with the long drive while Bob Sizemore and Don McKendry proved that coming closest to the hole on Nos. 6 and 8, respectively, is a piece of cake. Jeff Sinz made smiles all around for his "pure birdie."

A reminder for those of you that may not be quite old enough to drive: Junior golf clinics start up against soon. For $50 a week, you can hang out for two hours a day with our pro Tom Walsh at 8:30 a.m. from June 9 through June 13. Intermediate junior golf clinics run from June 16 to June 20. Minimum age for these super sessions is 8 years old; golfers can participate in junior golf programs through age 17.

Don't forget Friday the Hospice Auction and Putting Contest starts at 3 p.m. Bring a friend or four.

Sunday is the kickoff for our Couples Sunday Golf. Tee time is 2:30 p.m. with a barbecue to follow. This event is fun and relaxed and proves that wives and husbands can indeed coexist on the golf course. If you can't make this one, you've got more chances on June 8 and June 29. I'll keep you posted.

A reminder to those who have yet to renew your association dues: June 16 is the final deadline. Period.

Last, but definitely not least: Kelly Barclay of Ping will host a Demo Night at our course from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Golf tips and new clubs to try? Who can resist?
