For the first time in 200 years, Democrats in the U.S. Senate are promising to filibuster presidential candidates for the judiciary. The Constitution requires that the Senate has the responsibility to have judicial selections voted on after being passed out of the senate judicial committee. The Democrats have chosen an obstructionist path that is against a long tradition and is contrary to the Constitution.
In the last few months 4 or 5 Republicans have decided to either join the Democrats or not decide. One of these Republicans is Lisa Murkowski, who is being asked by reborn Christians to not break the Senate tradition and the policies of the Constitution.
So who are these reborn Christians?
Reborn believers indwelled by the Holy Spirit are saved by God's grace through faith, by having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, by accepting him as their Lord and Savior and by confessing and repenting their sins. In the gospel of John, Jesus Christ says "Unless one is born again, he shall not find the kingdom of God."
According to Harris and Barna polls, in the last election 82 percent of reborn Christians voted for President Bush. They made up about 25 percent of all voters and thus about 50 percent of those who voted for President Bush. The polls showed the number one issue for these voters was to get passed the judicial appointments that were held up for years by liberal extremists. They wanted judges passed who are constructionists and who follow the U.S. constitution and laws of the country. They don't want judges who make up laws based on their own political or social agenda or who use foreign laws as a foundation for our laws.
Recently I talked to a spokesperson for the Senate Majority Fund who was raising money for Republicans in the U.S. Senate. This person said that the majority of people are holding back donations until the Senate passes the judicial appointments.
It's interesting to note that the people who President Bush has nominated but who have been blocked or delayed for government cabinet positions or the judiciary have tended to be minorities (Hispanic, Black, Asian), women and religious. They all are highly qualified according to the Legal Bar Associations. Internal memos of Senate Democrats mention this as a premeditated strategy they are following.
This is certainly racism and bigotry at its worst and has no place anywhere in our country. It's interesting to note that the leading Democrat obstructionist, Senator Robert Byrd, is a former leader of the South Carolina Klu Klux Klan.
I would encourage all Republicans to call or write Lisa Murkowski and encourage her to make a decision to support President Bush and not the liberal obstructionists in the Senate. You may want to remind her that she would not have won her Senate seat without the support of reborn believers. She also promised to support judicial candidates put forth by our president.
